http://www.expedia.com/Hobart.d6052485.Destination-Travel-Guides When you first arrive in Hobart, you may not be aware that you’re exploring a former prison. This onetime penal colony is located between Mount Wellington and Port Hobart, and features a number of exquisite colonial buildings in breathtaking natural surroundings. There’s a variety of things to do within the city, so chow down on seafood from a waterfront restaurant before stopping by one of the galleries built into old whale oil warehouses. Don’t forget to check out the Hobart Theatre, a must-see on any Hobart tour. This structure was built by convicts brought to Australia in the 19th century, and it still hosts live performances today. Hobart sightseeing will no doubt include the Maritime Museum, which celebrates Hobart’s ties to the sea. Go for a sail on the Lady Nelson, a tall ship that makes regular excursions out to the harbor. You’ll work up an appetite trimming the sails and steering the ship, so why not venture to the Salamanca Market? For over 30 years, this market has featured fresh produce, local artwork, and clothing, and you’re bound to score a good bargain. Next, go upriver to MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. This building descends three floors down into the cliffs surrounding it, and its often dark-natured artwork is featured in vast, cavernous spaces. All that art is bound to make you thirsty, so pay a visit to some of the wineries dotting Hobart’s surrounding landscape. Sip responsibly on a glass of wine, nibble a wedge of cheese, and enjoy the rolling green hills around you. Now this is living! What will you do on your Hobart tour? In the second video instalment from Tasmania we head up to the top of Mount Wellington, the views of Hobart and the surrounding area were absolutely breathtaking... as was the icy cold wind. After a visit to the Shot Tower at Taroona we headed back to have a walk around the port in Hobart. The following day we visited a replica of Douglas Mawson's Hut which houses a fascinating museum about the his Antarctic expedition, after that we headed out on a great boat trip with Finn from Pennicott Wilderness Journeys. The Royal Australian Navy’s newest ship, the Guided Missile Destroyer NUSHIP Hobart, arrived in her home port of Sydney for the first time prior to her commissioning in September. The future HMAS Hobart is the first of three Hobart Class destroyers. In 2017, Hobart successfully completed builder and acceptance trials which tested the ship’s handling, equipment and systems to ensure they conform to the design and build specifications. The ship’s company are preparing for her commissioning, at which point she will enter the fleet as Her Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) Hobart and start her test and evaluation period. This period will integrate the ship into the fleet and train Navy personnel to operate the warship in an operational environment. When commissioned, the warship will have a ship’s company of approximately 180 personnel and will displace 7,000 tonnes when fully loaded. The ship is 146m long and can travel in excess of 28 knots.

We (the orchestra on the Radiance of the Seas cruise ship) had the day off and we were in port until 7:30pm so we had plenty of time to go to the Bonorong wildlife reserve and the Hobart Botanical gardens. We were going to go on the tour that goes to Bonorong but the lady at the information center said there weren't a lot of people interested in going in the morning so they canceled the early morning bus and the next bus would be at 2:00pm. We got to the info center at 10:30am and didn't want to wait until 2:00pm so Ladislav (our drummer in the orchestra-his nickname is Slavek) and Andriy (our pianist in the orchestra) decided to hire a cab for the day. The cab driver got us to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in about 25 minutes and he waited an hour and a half while we had a look around. Then, we drove back to Hobart and dropped us off at the Botanical gardens, which is only about 2 miles from downtown. After we visited the Botanical gardens we walked back into town to have some Japanese food, then we walked back to the ship. Lots of walking! We were exhausted at the end of the day!! It was a great day with perfect weather (about 75 degrees f) so we didn't mind walking so much. I never knew the Tasmanian Devil made such an evil sound. You have to hear it to believe it! Very intimidating! I would not want meet one in the wild. Bonorong is a great place. It takes in injured or orphaned animals and helps them get introduced back into the wild. (if possible). It is also a great place to feed some Kangaroos and see some Tasmanian Devils steal some sunglasses and make some evil noises when you try and take the sunglasses away from them. You will see what I am talking about when you watch the video. Enjoy!! http://bonorong.com.au/ http://www.rtbg.tas.gov.au/

Salamanca Place is a precinct of Hobart, the capital city of the Australian state of Tasmania. Salamanca Place itself consists of rows of sandstone buildings, formerly warehouses for the port of Hobart Town that have since been converted into restaurants, galleries, craft shops and offices. It was named after the victory in 1812 of the Duke of Wellington in the Battle of Salamanca in the Spanish province of Salamanca. It was previously called "The Cottage Green".
