Port Arthur is located approximately 60 km south east of the state capital, Hobart, on the Tasman Peninsula. Best known for it's Prison Colony site which was Australia's largest penal station and was named after Van Diemen's Land lieutenant governor George Arthur. From 1833, until the 1850s, it was the destination for the hardest of convicted British and Irish criminals, those who were secondary offenders having re-offended after their arrival in Australia. Rebellious personalities from other convict stations were also sent here, a quite undesirable punishment. In more recent times the port became famous once again for on 28 April 1996, Martin Bryant went on a killing spree, murdering 35 people and wounding 21 more before being captured by Special Operatives Police. Hobart sightseeing will no doubt include the Maritime Museum, which celebrates Hobart’s ties to the sea. Go for a sail on the Lady Nelson, a tall ship that makes regular excursions out to the harbor. You’ll work up an appetite trimming the sails and steering the ship, so why not venture to the Salamanca Market? For over 30 years, this market has featured fresh produce, local artwork, and clothing, and you’re bound to score a good bargain. Next, go upriver to MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. This building descends three floors down into the cliffs surrounding it, and its often dark-natured artwork is featured in vast, cavernous spaces. All that art is bound to make you thirsty, so pay a visit to some of the wineries dotting Hobart’s surrounding landscape. Sip responsibly on a glass of wine, nibble a wedge of cheese, and enjoy the rolling green hills around you. Now this is living! What will you do on your Hobart tour? It was a great day with perfect weather (about 75 degrees f) so we didn't mind walking so much. I never knew the Tasmanian Devil made such an evil sound. You have to hear it to believe it! Very intimidating! I would not want meet one in the wild. Bonorong is a great place. It takes in injured or orphaned animals and helps them get introduced back into the wild. (if possible). It is also a great place to feed some Kangaroos and see some Tasmanian Devils steal some sunglasses and make some evil noises when you try and take the sunglasses away from them. You will see what I am talking about when you watch the video. Enjoy!! http://bonorong.com.au/ http://www.rtbg.tas.gov.au/
